2011 Defensive Free Agents

by Jason Ciano and Derek Allen

Defensive Ends

  • Cullen Jenkins (GB) Great 3-4 NT for any team – Packers depth may mean not pursued – great pass rusher – missed 17 games 3 years

  • Tadba Hali (KC) Led AFC with 14.5 Sacks – Non-exclusive franchised while team works out $$$ contract – Fits in any system

  • Charles Johnson (CAR) 2007  third round pick – 12 sacks and dominated left side  – Tendered – Many possible dance partners
  • Jason Babin (TEN) Jumped to 12.5 sacks contract year from previous career best 5 – Accepting offers for his new home

  • Mathias Kiwanuke (NYG) Explosive pass rusher injured with herniated disk last year – Awesome otherwise – can go or stay

  • Shaun Ellis (NYJ) Still gettin it done with impressive motor but clock is ticking on longest tenured Jet – Team has many free agents and his contract may be last on their list

  • Ray Edwards (MIN) Longshot to return unless gives home team discount – Not team priority – Played well on good line –  Has May 20th boxing match scheduled

 Tackles

  • Haloti Ngata (BAL)  One of the top 3-4 NT in the game – Non-exclusive franchised @ 12.5 milli, another team would have to give up two first-round picks in order to sign. May become a Raven for life if history repeats
  • Brandon Mebane (SEA)  Great against run but new schemes demands more pass rushing – they might not give his worth as free agents and the draft are deep with lineman for less $$$$ – Coach indicates may not quite fit new system – but may be able to stay with team if gives discount less than full value
  • Aubrayo Franklin (SF)  Smaller Solid NT plays well in contract years – will be well paid well when season starts
  • Pat Williams (MIN) Aging and able but probably won’t be back as team drafts younger talent – Trust issues with management

  • Stephen Tulloch (TEN) Stephen Tulloch – has been tendered but club hopes to lock him in – he’s due great money as one of the best 4-3 middle linebackers in the league – on Detroit’s radar
  •  Paul Posluszny (BUF) under-rated, and has been tagged – gets even colder if they lose him in Buffalo – anchors defense
  • James Anderson (CAR) had great year – great run defender but team doesnt want to give him high dollars – will probably let go

     Cornerbacks

  • Brandon Carr – one of the best young corners in the league – started every game last 3 years – great value  5th round pick
  • Brent Grimes (ATL) first round tendered –  a quality cover corner that makes plays –  Looking for long-term  money
  • Nnamdi Asomugha (OAK) Coach Hue not optimistic will return – All teams that can afford will take a look for one of the top covers in the NFL – Deserves premium contract – may be a good fit in Jax, Phi, or Dallas
  • Johnathan Joseph (CIN) Played uninspired, like the whole team did – partial to returning, provided there is a nice raise. Is still one of the best on the market.
  • Carlos Rogers (WAS) Drops Picks, or he would be in greater demand – waited 6 years to become FA – have money will play
  • Antonio Cromartie (NYJ) Big time player for a number 2 – lots of mouths to feed – can’t wait to sign a contract anywhere
